What Are Probiotics? Benefits, Strains and How to Choose
Probiotics are live microorganisms that provide a demonstrated health benefit when taken in an adequate amount. They are not one interchangeable category: results depend on the exact strain or strain combination, dose, formulation and reason for use.
Research supports certain probiotic uses more clearly than others. This guide explains the evidence without treating every product, CFU number or wellness claim as equivalent.
Probiotics at a glance
What are probiotics?
The scientific definition is narrower than everyday marketing language. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.1
Most probiotic supplements contain bacteria, although certain yeasts can also qualify. To call a microorganism a probiotic responsibly, manufacturers and researchers need more than a species name. They need a defined organism, enough viable cells, suitable manufacturing and storage, and evidence relevant to the intended use.
This is why “contains live cultures” and “is a probiotic” are not always the same statement. Yoghurt, kefir, kimchi and other fermented foods may contain living microorganisms, but a food does not automatically become a probiotic unless the microorganisms and benefit meet the accepted criteria.
Probiotics are also not simply permanent replacements for the bacteria already living in the body. Many supplemental strains are detected only temporarily. They may interact with resident microorganisms and the host while being consumed without becoming lifelong members of the microbiome.
What does the evidence say about probiotic benefits?
“Do probiotics work?” is too broad a question. A useful assessment asks: which strain, at what dose, in which population, for what outcome, and for how long?

How can probiotics work?
Mechanisms vary by organism and body site. Research has described several ways in which specific probiotics may interact with the host or existing microbial community, but no single mechanism applies to every product.
Competition and local conditions
Some microorganisms can compete for nutrients or attachment sites and produce compounds that alter the local environment. These effects are species- and strain-dependent.
Interaction with barriers
Certain strains have been investigated for interactions with intestinal epithelial cells and barrier function. Evidence from one strain should not be applied to an unrelated formulation.
Signalling and metabolites
Microorganisms can produce metabolites and communicate with host cells. The clinical relevance depends on whether the product reaches the relevant site and has been tested in humans.
How to read probiotic strains and CFU
The name on a probiotic label is not decoration. It helps connect the organism in the product to the organism used in research.
Genus, species and strain
A familiar example is Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG, historically called Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. The first word identifies the genus, the second identifies the species, and the final letters or numbers identify the strain.
What does CFU mean?
CFU means colony-forming units, an estimate of viable microorganisms capable of forming colonies under test conditions. It is commonly used to express the amount present in a serving.
A larger CFU number is not automatically superior. The relevant question is whether the amount matches evidence for that organism and formulation.
Manufacture versus end of shelf life
Viability can change during storage. Check whether the stated count applies at manufacture or is guaranteed through the end of shelf life. Follow the storage instructions because temperature and moisture can affect some formulations.

The terms are connected, but they do not describe the same thing.
Probiotics

Prebiotics
Selectively used substratesSubstrates selectively utilised by host microorganisms that confer a health benefit. Not every fibre is automatically a prebiotic.
Food sources can include certain fibres in onions, garlic, oats, legumes and other plants.
What is a synbiotic?
A synbiotic combines live microorganisms with substrate or substrates selectively utilised by microorganisms, with an overall demonstrated health benefit.5

Probiotic foods, capsules and gummies
Format affects convenience, formulation and storage, but it does not tell you whether a product will achieve a specific outcome.
Fermented foods
Foods such as live yoghurt, kefir, kimchi and sauerkraut can contribute microbial and nutritional variety. The strains and quantities may be less standardised than a researched supplement.
Capsules
Capsules allow defined amounts and can accommodate different strain combinations. Some use protective technologies, but performance depends on the complete formulation rather than the shell alone.
Gummies
Gummies can suit people who dislike capsules. Compare the stated organisms, shelf-life count, serving size and sugar or sweetener content rather than assuming the format is stronger or weaker.

Probiotics and women’s health
The gut and vaginal microbiomes are distinct ecosystems. Products intended for digestion and products marketed for intimate wellness should not be treated as interchangeable.
The vaginal microbiome
Many healthy vaginal microbial communities are dominated by Lactobacillus species, although composition varies between individuals and over time. Lactobacilli can contribute to an acidic environment through lactic-acid production.

Symptoms require the right assessment
Unusual odour, discharge, itching, burning or pain can have several causes. A probiotic cannot diagnose the cause, and current clinical guidance does not support using probiotics as a replacement for established treatment of bacterial vaginosis or vulvovaginal candidiasis.7

Can probiotics be taken with antibiotics?
Some probiotic regimens have reduced antibiotic-associated diarrhoea in clinical studies, particularly when started around the antibiotic course, but results vary by strain, dose and population.4
Because an antibiotic can affect susceptible probiotic bacteria, clinicians and product instructions may recommend separating doses — often by approximately two hours. The appropriate approach depends on the antibiotic and probiotic, so follow the medicine label and ask a pharmacist when uncertain.

Probiotic safety and side effects
Probiotics have a history of apparently safe use in healthy people, but safety is not identical for every organism, product or person.2
Possible short-term effects
Some people report temporary gas, bloating or changes in bowel habits. Stop taking the product and obtain advice if symptoms are severe, persistent or accompanied by signs of illness.
Who should ask first?
People who are severely immunocompromised, critically ill, receiving certain cancer treatments or living with complex medical devices may face greater risk from live microorganisms and should obtain professional guidance.
How to choose a probiotic supplement
The strongest product is not automatically the one with the longest strain list or highest CFU number.
Start with the intended use
Look for evidence connected to your goal rather than a generic promise to “balance everything”.
Identify the organisms
Prefer clear genus, species and strain information where strain-specific evidence is being used.
Check the serving, not the headline
Confirm how many capsules or gummies provide the stated amount and whether it is a daily serving.
Understand the CFU statement
Check whether viability is stated at manufacture or through shelf life and follow storage directions.
Review the complete formula
Consider prebiotics, allergens, sweeteners, capsule materials and ingredients that may affect suitability.
Reject miracle claims
A credible product should not promise to cure infections, permanently colonise the microbiome or work for every person.
